The scene opens on the camera walking up to a dark and run-down looking gym. It is past midnight and everything is still and quiet. But out of the dark, soft at first, but growing in loudness, is the sound of something being pounded. The doors to the gym creep up, and there, in the moonlight, stands a sweaty and tired Buddy Love. He swings left and right, pounding his fists into the heavy back. The heavy bag swings back and forth from every blow from Buddy’s bloody and torn fists.
Cash: There you are Buddy…….. I have been looking for you all night.
Buddy: Is that right Mr. Cash……. Sorry, but I’m not really in the mood for an interview.
Cash: What’s wrong Buddy?
With a haymaker, Buddy steps away from the heavy bag and looks down at his bloodied hands.
Cash: Buddy?! What did you do to your hands?
Buddy: Nothing out of ordinary. Seems to always happen before a fight I’m nervous for….. I haven’t slept……. I haven’t eaten…….. Hell, I haven’t had a drink in over two days…… I’ve never done that before.
Cash: You are nervous about facing David Hilt? The Mid-Atlantic Champion?
Buddy: Cash my friend…….. I am in the last fight before main event. The under-card for the main attraction for the evening…… I have never been there before; never in a boxing match, and never in the wrestling ring.
Cash: I can understand that Buddy……
Buddy: This weekend, I go up against David Hilt. He is a hell of a fighter……that’s why he’s a champ. He’s got a hell of a lot of respect, and he’s a hell of a lot better than me.
Cash: But Buddy, Hilt said-
Buddy: Me and him have a lot in common. We are both funny dudes, we love the ladies, and we fight hard. On Sunday, I’m going out there with a purpose. This is the biggest fight I have ever had. It might not be the main event, but to me, this is the main event. I think Hilt is with me on this one…… we want to go out there and give the fans a hell of a show. I think Pittsburg is going to get two main events on Sunday.
Cash: Are you going to win Buddy?
Buddy: Cash, I don’t know…… Me and Hilt are gladiators, we are fighters, we are men……. And we are mortal. I guess the fates will have to decide………
Cash: What do you mean?
Suddenly, Buddy pulls a large silver coin out of his pocket and flicks it into the air of his thumb. The coin flips and flops through the air. The coin slams into the ground, sending its ringing echo through the gym. The coin hops a few times and starts to spin on the concrete. Slowly, the coin’s spin comes to a stop, but it doesn’t fall onto a side. It remains standing straight up.
Buddy: I guess the fates are sitting this one out….. If you excuse me Cash, I need to try and get some sleep.
Buddy walks out of the gym and slams the doors behind him. The slam rattles the rafters of the gym and causes the coin to fall over. Cash walks up to the coin and picks it up. He looks down at the coin puzzled. Other than a small amount of Buddy’s blood on the coin, it is blank. There isn’t a face on either side.
Cash: What the hell……
