Unmasking the Beast Part 1
The light peaks in through the thin blinds. A nicely dressed man seated in a chair with a paper and pen looks up as an abrupt knock on the door bring him out of his day dream. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! The knocks became more louder and more obnoxious as time goes on. The man gets up from his laziness and walks towards the door. He opens it and is shocked. Takeshi Tanahashi stands in the doorway with a helpless look on his face.
Psychiatrist: Are you my two o'clock?
Takeshi: Please do not refer me as a time. I have a name.
Psychiatrist: Please excuse me Mr..?
Takeshi: Takeshi Tanahashi.
Psychiatrist: Oh yes. Please lie down over here.
The man now known as a physiatrist escorts Takeshi to his seat and then retreats to his own chair. Takeshi plops on to the couch and starts to twiddle his thumbs while looking up towards the very bland ceiling. Dr. Rees grabs his paper and pen and he looks up at Takeshi.
Dr. Rees: You have a very decorative... umm mask.
Takeshi: You mean this f**king thing on my head!
Takeshi grabs his mask and is about to rip it off when Rees puts his hand up as if to halt.
Dr. Rees: Is that what you are here for?
Takeshi: Yes!
Dr. Rees: What is wrong with it?
Takeshi: Doc, I have been wearing this... thing for almost thirteen years. It has been my companion in my career. I have always taken care of it and it has always taken care of me. I don't mean this as if the thing was a human, it's just that......I have become attached to this mask because I have become famous with it. If I were to take it off, no one would recognize me and I would be a failure. And on the other hand if I were to take it off, I might turn out to be a success story in America. That's the thing doc, I'm scared of failure. Not only that but this mask.... it is stopping me from being successful in America.
Dr. Rees: Are you sure it's your mask? Maybe you are a little rusty in the wrestling ring.
Takeshi sits up and looks at Dr. Rees with a "WTF!" kind of frown.
Takeshi: Not possible. I am the best wrestler overseas and I will become the best wrestler in America. Maybe you need a brief history on me. I have held every major title in Japan and I have won every major tournament in Japan. Apparently, you think that I am a little "rusty", maybe if I were to tell you that you suck ass at your job. What is your response?
Dr. Rees: Maybe your mask is the thing making you angry.
Takeshi: Yeah because it's causing a whole lot of shit in my life right now that needs to be fixed immediately. If someone was stopping you from doing the best at your job too, you would want to fix it. That is all I am trying got do. This is the question I need advice on. Should I keep the mask or should I reveal myself to the entire world. Taking into consideration that my personal life would be exposed and everyone would know who I am. Also it could lead to a sudden downfall in my career.
Dr. Rees: Well to be honest with you Mr. Tanahashi, I can't make that decision. It is up to you to make it.
Takeshi: Your kidding right?
Dr. Rees: I can only give you my input and what I think you should do.
Takeshi: What's your input.
Dr. Rees: I think that a beast lies within you Takeshi. And the only way for people to see the way you truly are, as the beast, is for you to take off your mask. See, currently, people see you as, just a wrestler. Everyone knows your past but no one really knows who you are. You were isolated as a child and the only person that knows what you look like was your wrestling trainer many years ago, Takeru Kishinshima. No one knows who you really are Takeshi. American's are not use to successful masked wrestlers. No masked wrestler has ever had a long term success in America. It is because no one wants to see a faceless monster reign supreme. They want to see the beast within. That mask is the fine line between human... and beast.
Takeshi: That's the thing, I have been masked for over ten years now, without a mask equals without fame. People don't know who I am, hell I don't even know who I am anymore.
Dr. Rees: If that is the case, you must start over again and regain your fame.
Takeshi: And fourteen years of hard work down the shitter?
Dr. Rees: If that is what it takes. As it turns out you are facing Josh Eagles on Sunday. You could get ahead of the game and start their, unmasked ofcourse.
Takeshi: Josh Eagles is another worthless opponent. He is too caught in Supermania 3 anyway. I mean did you see what I did to that asshat of a giant, Orge Lambert, last week? I terrorized that damn buffoon. I made him sorry that he has ever screwed me over. Now, I know a little somethin' somethin' about Mr. Eagles here. I know that he is a former UWL Heavyweight Champion, which is probably one of the most prestigious independent titles. I know that he didn't win that title by sucking dick. So by beating this damn has-been, I will regain my status as a top of the line wrestler. Doc, I'm feeling good about this match.
Dr. Rees: I want you to do something before that match, Takeshi.
Takeshi: Train?
Dr. Rees shakes his head as if Takeshi was a boy that is denying something that he is guilty for.
Takeshi: I can't take this mask off!
Dr. Rees: You have to.
Takeshi: BUT I COULD FAIL!
Dr. Rees: IT"S HUMAN NATURE TO FAIL! EVERYONE FAILS!
Takeshi: BUT I AM NOT EVERYONE! I AM THE BEST DAMN WRESTLER EVER! And I will do whatever the hell I please!
Takeshi sits up and walks to the door. He pulls out a wallet and throws money at Dr. Rees. Rees' face is red and you can feel the anger within.
Takeshi: I never fail........
