The Flanagan Tale
This tale doesn’t begin as one Reck told so long ago, in a time where Reck, Flap, and Josh were but children… playing around and wondering what they would do with their future. No large tales are told where people “seem” much more superior then the others but instead this tale is of the truth of how Josh and Flap have interacted and bonded of the years… what they shared, what they did, and now where they are? This tale is not one that people are happy about or children read a night, this is a tale that shows the darkest places each man shared together… this is the start of the tale of the trio… the spotlight being on one… FLAP FLANAGAN!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The current scene of whatever random event is on begins to fade out into a new scene, a scene that took place many a year ago. It opens into a small gymnasium where a few scattered seats are placed, mostly full of children, and teenagers with way too many pimples and glasses. Their seats are all facing one object in the center though, a small and tattered ring… looking out of place, something that looks like it has seen it’s fair share of matches and is now in need of repairs.
The letters are so faded on the apron they can no longer even be made out, the ring ropes are held together by various colors of tape, some places even still peeled… and the mat itself had various tears in it and stains from all sorts of things… blood, pop, sweat, maybe even coffee one could not totally be sure. But even with all these obvious flaws the crowd around was still buzzing with excitement… well as much excitement as 25 people can muster up.
In the ring their was a scrawny boy with a large head and larger ears and even at this young age you could tell it was none other then Flap Flanagan the now current king of Dr. Pepper Mountain, the Flanchise Player, and one of the most cheered members of the ever growing POW roster. This Flap was just like the Flap of our own time, a dumb founded look on his face that would make anybody smile, slouching and looking around smiling randomly and waving to fans as though he did not know what to do.
Standing on the outside of the ring behind Flap Flanagan was another young man, a little more well built… but not that big really but with a much more clever and excited look on his face, this is none other then POW Newcomer and Wrestling Legend Josh Eagles! Across the ring from the duo is a team of people nobody really recognizes unless you are a fan of Canadian Independent Wrestling, then you would know they were the Southside Stranglers, two large hairy men in masks… it is more the less what you need to know.
In the background a bell rings and the much larger man comes at Flap who instantly drops into the fetile position on the ground, causing the man to stop and look at him in confusion. Then out of nowhere Flap springs into action and rolls the man up with his trademark ROLL UP OF DOOM, but the man manages to barley kick out and Flap is quick to tag in Josh who leaps over the top rope and comes down hard upon the man before he gets off the ground, nailing him with the Sweet Sacrifice. Josh rolls into a cover and of course the other Strangler staggers into the ring to break up the count, but Flap comes out of nowhere waving his hands above his head and yelling WHEEEEEE as he chases the man from the ring.
This allows time for the three count to go down and for Josh and Flap to pick up a quick victory. Within seconds Josh and Flap are celebrating together shaking hands and leaping up pointing at each other, but just then the scene begins to fade to black and a voice fades quietly and reflectively into the background.
“You see even when we first began… it was never Flap who had the talent! Hell until only a few years ago he didn’t even know what anything other then a DDT and a Roll Up were. Back then it was all for fun, you and your crazy antics… me and my skill! We always won, we always had each others back… but it always held me back… my skills were nothing to your hilarious antics, the fans LOVED you, the cheered YOU… not because you were good… but because you made them laugh! I hated you for that… all these years I hated that!”
The voice once again fades back out and another scene begins to slowly fade in, this scene more the less the same as the last one but at a much larger venue with only Josh Eagles and Flap Flanagan standing in the center of the ring. Confetti was falling from the rafters as Flap held the MPW Heavyweight Title above his head and high fived Josh who was wearing another belt the MPW United Kingdom Title around his own waist, but all the spotlight and attention was on Flap Flanagan… even though the crowd was booing, after all this was during the Pure Soul Wrestlers phase and the PSW was not the most liked faction in wrestling.
Even then a man rose to his feet holding his head, some would recognize the tall man as Jay Jefferson a man who would play a LARGE part in Josh Eagles future, but played a large part in Flap’s at that moment… failing to beat Flap and become the MPW Heavyweight Champion. Although both Josh and Flap were celebrating, the look of hate was all over Josh’s face… a man who was Flap’s friend and he knew was… just could not find joy in the victory he had gotten that night as the scene fades out once more.
“It was my main stream debut company and I had only just battled in the most helacious match of my life with Reck Maverick… beating him and becoming the MPW United Kingdom Champion… continuing my undefeated streak and showing that I would be a force to be reckoned with in the wrestling world. The PSW had made claims forever that the UK title was the REAL top title… was the one that mattered… but you couldn’t have that, you had to rise up and obtain the Heavyweight Title and take all the glory upon yourself… you wouldn’t let me live in the spotlight would you Flap?
Well I held it all in… I let you have your moment because we both knew that moment would not last forever, that soon you would fall down to the mercy of Josh Eagles… soon you would see that the best wrestler the world had ever seen was standing right beside you, but who knew it would happen so fast.”
Again the scene fades out but this time no clear scene appears and instead a flash of scenes… Josh holding the UWL Heritage Title, the UWL Heavyweight Title, the UWL Tag Team Titles, multiple scenes with Josh giving Flap orders… letting Flap take shots for him, with Josh’s hands raised in victory while Flap lay face down on the mat… then it stops and focuses in on a still frame where Josh stood looking at his blood soaked hand and Flap lay face down in the middle of the ring, a blood pool around his head, the ring surrounded by a steel cage. But just as quickly as everything flashed by… it all fades out again.
“The Universal Wrestling League is where I Josh Eagles would surpass you Flap… every step of the way you would fail and another accomplishment would be made by me! I would become the first ever UWL Heritage Champion… I would be the first and only person to capture all the UWL Titles, I would be the one who beat you multiple times, leave you bloody in a steel cage, make you my bitch in the PIS… I would be the one who stood tall finely out of the shadow of my long time companions… the UWL is where I would mark out the existence of Flap and Josh and make it just Josh… make Flap an afterthought and EAGLES the ONLY thought!
Do you remember it Flap? Do you remember the surprise when I turned my back on you? Do you remember how much it hurt, how you pretended it didn’t? Do you remember how I Josh Eagles made sure I was the way you got your ONLY title in that company? Do you remember how it felt to know that I was the better man, the better athlete, how you finally understood what your place was in the scheme of everything?
I really hope you do Flap Flanagan because I remember every moment of it…I also remember when you beat me in our last match, not me directly but I did not win the match Flap! It was a triple threat match… just like the one we have coming up this week and you managed to pin our opponent and pick up the win… YOU DID FLAP! In that moment you managed to surpass me and for all this time I didn’t understand why that had happened, how it had happened and now I am starting to understand why.
It is not that I have let myself fall Flap it is that I have not allowed myself to rise, it is that I felt confident in the same skills the same methods! I didn’t need to evolve or grow if I was already the best there was and I paid for it… while everyone around me grew I stood at a stand still and didn’t let myself become the man I should be today. On this day you stand a better man then me, just like Reck stands a better man then me. Flap we all have detailed histories and this is just to let you begin understanding how things have went between us, how we have gotten to this point and maybe get you to understand something.
Flap if I was better then you back then and I have now found out what my problem is… if I have begun to work on it… do you think you will be better then me this upcoming week? Do you think you will be able to beat me, pin me, or pin Maverick? Do you think I will be a push over that you can look past and into the future, that you can use this match to get your career out of limbo and back into meaning? Well it would be a mistake to do any of those things!
I learned something last week a Spring Breakage when I lost to Reck, I learned that I to have to grow, I to have to evolve, and that I was stupid to underestimate people… I did it to Reck before and I did it to you before but now I am not… I am ready to step up and grow just like all of you did! I guess you can say we are going back to the olden days where I am learning from you two, where Josh Eagles will be the apprentice once again!”
The voice begins to fade again and a live feed of Josh Eagles begins to appear standing there with an intense look on his face staring at the camera.
“But remember Flanagan… last time I was the weakest link and I took the time to learn from you two… I SURPASSED both of you… and rest assured this week I will do it again!”
