It had been a long drive... Reid and the crew left the last show just about as soon as the crowd cleared... They immediately piled into the minivan that Flap rented (How he did that with no insurance, license or anything is a mystery.) Reck had been driving all night - His emotions where to messed up to allow him to sleep. So he drove while everyone else - Flap, Rei, ALF and Maria - slept. Reid began to speak, not to anyone in particular but rather just to himself - a monologue if you will.
Reid Flanagan - Wow... So much much has happened and changed in the few short weeks following Americana... A month ago two stables fought for the supremacy of this company - Now only a couple of those figures remain, destined again to compete against one another in battle - this time for gold instead of bragging rights...
My Brother...
Reid looks over to his older brother Flap... whose face is pressed against the glass of the window... his drool slowly crawls from his mouth... Reid smiles a little and reaches to the vehicles cup holder and grabs the can of Diet Pepsi that is sitting there and takes a small sip and sets it back down.
Reid Flanagan - One month ago Flap has doing nothing... being left off the show now he's got another opportunity to capture that AAA medal... No doubt he would put it to good use unlike it's former host... I think he's finally begun to take these opportunities seriously.
I think back a month ago and look at Reiko - at that time she was a servant to ego-maniacal self-deluded bastard and she served him loyalty out of some perverted sense of honour. Now... She is once again a free spirit - but a spirit wrapped in the cloth of vengeance... I will have to take it upon myself to shape... mold that raw vengence into a force of good. For if left unchecked there is no telling what she could be capable of...
And myself... Oddly enough I find myself the only being that is still in the same place as I was 4 weeks ago. Driving to the same building to face the same man for the same title... The Midwestern Heavyweight Championship... The premiere title in our promotion, that was proven a mere 6 hours ago when my opponent - Shawn Stevens and myself defeated the best that the World could offer in JR Zevon, John Anthony, Kailus Holmes and Flying Diamond Cutter Man... They all fell before us and everyone in the building found out that both myself and Shawn Stevens where the Best of The Best...
But now it's time to learn who is the Best of The Best... Of The Best... Three Stages of Purgatory... 3 possible matches, each one more brutal then the last but perhaps the most important aspect of this event is the fact that there is no time limit... That's what prevented us from finding out who the best was at Americana... 60 minutes seems like an eternity for most but it flew by too fast then.
I have no doubt that this contest will be regarded as one of the best matches of all time and will be on the POW highlight reels for years to come but... I think about and realize how Lucky I have been. Shawn Stevens could have taken that time limit draw and ran and could've been standing across the ring from a less worthy foe, but for some reason Jay T. Nitro or Nick Pickles or whoever it was in charge decided to give me another shot at the belt... That had never been done before in the history of this company.
Reid turns on his signal and turns onto a road that intersected the one he was on.
Reid Flanagan - I think... it had something to do with the loyalty I showed to this company and to the people that represent it... How many of Shawn's challengers either retired, jumped to our sister promotion or just plain dropped out of POW altogether after he defeated them... almost everyone but I wouldn't do that, I wouldn't just walk away - I sacrificed too much to get to the point that I am at, and I didn't do it for a mere championship belt... I mean sure it's a part of it but really in the end I don't care if I win the belt or not - I just want to face the best that the POW has to offer and see if I can measure up... One month ago I did face the very best in the company and it went to stalemate - draw, no winner... and the top suits never the fans wouldn't settle for a draw and end it at that - they wanted a winner...
So now I'm driving all this way to answer the unanswered questions of the fans, the unanswered question inside my own soul and the unanswered question that are likely brewing in the spirit of Shawn Stevens. He would never admit it but he knows he got lucky that the bell rang last time. I do not know how much he values that gold belt but apparently it is too much, it has allowed it to corrupt him. He once was like me, he fought for the fans and he fought for what was right, at a couple points we were even allies... But that's changed now, he now fights for that belt and nothing more...
I have seen this side of him before back in UWL and at that time there was only one man that could and defeat him and break the hold that devil-belt had over him - His name... was Cody Cross and now just over a year later, history is destined to repeat itself except is I who must break the curse and remove the cursed grip of the Championship belt from Shawn Stevens.
Reid... Who are you... talking to?
Reid look into the rear view mirror and sees Reiko who is still half asleep. Reid's monologue must have woken her up. Reid smiles a little to himself and re-focuses on the road.
Reid Flanagan - Sorry Rei, I was just thinking out loud... Go back to sleep, we'll be there in a couple hours.
Reid watches as Reiko drifts back into a sleep state. He again smiles and goes back to driving as the episode ends.
To Be Continued...
