Weekly Role Play #1

DJ: “Welcome back to Dave & Buster’s here on 98.8 The Rock, Kansas City’s one and only home for the best classic rock. I’m here getting ready to play you another set of the best rock of yesterday and today, but first I’m pleased to announce that we have a special guest with us in the studio today. Professional wrestler for Power-On Wrestling and President of Public Relations for Bodog Sports… Mr. John Anthony!”
John: “It’s a pleasure to be here Dave.”
Dave: “Now for those that don’t know, Mr. Anthony here is a professional wrestler who captured the Eastern Heavyweight Championship from former champion JR Zevon during a DVD Taping event for Power On Wrestling. While Mr. Anthony originally worked for the north eastern branch stationed in New Jersey, he has since been transferred into the ranks of the Midwest, stationed right here in Kansas City!”
John: “Indeed I have Dave, and while it started off on a bad foot, I must say here as of late that I’ve grown rather fond of the Midwest region. A few trinkets to remind me of home definitely helped out.”
Dave: “You must be referring to the perks you recently received from your boss, CEO of Bodog Sports Calvin Ayre. Remind us just what your latest paycheck included?”
John: “Upon my request, I’ve been granted the keys to the single nicest hotel suite I’ve ever laid eyes on within the States. The Presidential Suite at the infamous Western Crown is now where I lay my head, high atop on the 29th floor.”
Dave: “Oh but that’s not all now is it Mr. Anthony? I hear you also came into possession of a new set of wheels, and a very luxurious set at that.”
John: “Correct again. Calvin was kind enough to fulfill a certain dream of mine, and my method of transportation has been upgraded from Kansas City taxi cabs to a black-on-black 2008 Audi R8 Speedster.”
Dave: “Truly the envy of nearly every man on the roads!”
John: “But I’m in possession of one more trinket that far surpasses any material possession one could acquire, and that would be my beautiful assistant Julia Sven. She’s stood beside me through the ups and the downs of my professional wrestling career and remains by my side during my adventures here in the Midwest that, I must say, has taken an interesting turn here in the past week.”
Dave: “Allow me to do a little hype duty for Power On Wrestling if you don’t mind. It was announced last weekend that John Anthony would be competing against Midwest Heavyweight Champion Reck Maverick in a title unification match. Due to the dip in the professional wrestling industry here as of late that has left many Power On Wrestlers on the sidelines, Jay T Nitro came to the conclusion that there were too many titles for the dwindling roster and that Reckless Abandon needed a spark. That came in the form of this amazing match that will pit the two respective heavyweight champions against one another to form the National Heavyweight Championship.”
John: “You’ve done your homework haven’t you Dave?”
Dave: “What can I say? I’m a fan. Now as I mentioned, Power On Wrestling’s roster has taken quite a hit lately. What are you opinions on this?”
John: “It’s unfortunate, but a part in any business. There will always be ups and downs, and I’ll admit that POW is in somewhat of a slump right now roster wise. Now don’t get me wrong, there are still amazing superstars on the active roster that will go out there every week to put on one hell of a show, but you always feel the loss of a superstar like JR Zevon, Kaleb Shadix, John Morrison, Shawn Stevens, Buddy Love, or anyone else who has taken a leave of absence recently. It does stand as an accolade to our managing staff and remaining roster to still be able to put out a top class product though, and Reckless Abandon will be living proof that POW is alive and well. Not just because of my match either, but due to a number of title unification matches and excellent matchups.”
Dave: “On that note, let’s speak of your matchup for a moment against Big Ci this weekend. This will be the final outing for you before traveling to New York for Reckless Abandon. How do you feel going into this match against an unfamiliar competitor?”
John: “Whenever I’ll be stepping into the ring with someone, the first thing I do is begin studying tapes of their prior matches. Getting a feel for how your opponent works and thinks is crucial to having any kind of fighting chance against them. Sure you can feel them out once the bell rings, but by then you’re already at a disadvantage. Against a respectable opponent, someone along the lines of Big Ci, you cannot risk that kind of action. I need to know all that I can about him before I even come through the curtain Friday evening. Beyond just the tapes, you can look at how they handle themselves backstage and the relationships they have with other superstars. Through this I can get a taste for their psychology, whether to expect dirty tactics, or if this will take a less methodical approach. It is this pre-match routine that has given me victories over stars such as JR Zevon, Buddy Love, Mick Cormac, and others.”
Dave: “Looking specifically at Big Ci though, how do you match up with him?”
John: “The man is near monstrous proportions in size. I consider myself to be a fair height, but Big Ci stands six-and-a-half feet tall and nearly three hundred pounds. That right there means any type of powerslam maneuver is going to be that much more draining on my body. I’ll need to rely on speed obviously, but also to try and control the pace of the match. A bigger man might not be as agile inside the squared circle and one can always question their stamina. If I can push the pace and manage to wear down Big Ci, I feel that I can utilize my martial arts background and in-ring maturity to capitalize on the situation and score the pinfall.”
Dave: “How important is winning this match on Friday and building momentum for Reckless Abandon?”
John: “Crucial. Plain and simple. A loss Friday would have the entire POW roster questioning me before I put my title on the line against Reck Maverick. The same stands for him however as he faces off against the Triple A Medallion holder: Night. If he were to lose his match, the rumor mill would be ablaze with verbal attacks on his ability to be the upcoming National Heavyweight Champion. Prestige, honor, and public image are all key factors in the booking of the title unification match, and I can think of no two better men for Nitro to put in the ring for such an event than Maverick and myself. That’s not just me being conceited either. I have truly put a large effort in helping building the reputation of POW across the States. Whether it is through pep rallies in Maine, press conferences thanks to Calvin Ayre, advertisements like this one, or house shows, I have hyped everything POW has to offer and will continue to do so. Next Friday you’re going to see history made and a new champion crowned.”
Dave: “One last question Mr. Anthony… as of late you have been in a series of Midwest matches that haven’t exactly gone your way. A singles loss paired with a couple of tag team defeats have seemed to put your momentum on hold as Reckless Abandon looms. Do you believe that you yourself have the capabilities to down the man who defeated Shawn Stevens for the Midwest Title in a Three Stages of Hell Match that shook the very foundations of the professional wrestling world?”
John: “Haha, Dave, at this rate you might just find yourself being offered a job from Nitro himself! You most certainly have a way of stacking the cards against me on paper. Joking aside, Reck Maverick deserves to be hyped up. He deserves the limelight that he receives as Midwest Champion, and he deserves the opportunity to be crowned the new National Heavyweight Champion. Now while I may have been on a ‘slump’ here lately, I’m still in excellent shape and ready to explode right back onto the scene. I had a serious sinus infection due to the new climate that was leaving me feeling less than myself, and I apologize to my fans if I let them down these past few weeks. But when the lights shone bright and whenever my title has been on the line, I’ve come crashing through the black curtain, eager to defend everything I’ve earned. That quest continues this Friday when I face Big Ci, and it comes to a dramatic crescendo a week later against Reck Maverick. One of us is walking out the champion of champions. One of us will be making history next Friday in New York. Yes, just one of us. We both have the credentials and the necessary abilities to make something like this happen, but the question left to be answered is who will step up and grasp the prize at hand?”
Dave: “Well, you definitely have me excited already Mr. Anthony, and we appreciate you stopping by the studios to speak with us. Fans if you’d like to see John Anthony and the rest of the Power On Wrestling superstars, contact your local ticket provider or the information hotline for the Ameristar Casino for ticket information. Or, if you’d like to see Reckless Abandon live and in person to witness a match that will make history in the wrestling world, you can contact the Hammerstein Ballroom, although seats are extremely limited. Now stay tuned as we get set to hit the airwaves with another block of the greatest classic rock your ears have ever heard, and keep listening tonight as we give out a pair of those highly coveted tickets to Reckless Abandon!”
