I sat there, staring at the screen. I had no idea what to write about. Worst of all, I found the whole thing rather stupid. Why should I waste my time writing papers when I could be using this valuable time to train for my upcoming match? It was ridiculous.
Matteo had me sitting in front of a computer in the back office of his wrestling gym, writing a 600 word paper on why I want to be a wrestler. So far, I had five words. The title "Why I Want To Wrestle".
I had to get out. It was way too boring. I got up and walked out of the door into the main area. A few guys were hanging around training. I walked past the ring and saw two guys sparring in the ring. One irish whipped the other and then dropkicked him. I stood around watching them for a while.
Matteo: You see that?
Chris: Huh?
Matteo: The way they fight. With such intensity, such spirit.
Chris: Yeah, I guess.
Matteo: They know why they're fighting. Why they would stand in a ring and last out the other man. If you don't know why you're doing it, then you wont last five minutes in the ring, let alone a match.
Chris: But I do know why I'm fighting.
Matteo: Then why is it?
Chris: ...
Matteo: Exactly. Before you step into the ring with Eddie Jones, you gotta know why you fight. If you don't, youre going to fail. Every wrestler worth his weighthas a reason why he fights. What's yours?
I never forgot that piece of advice.
