Weekly Role Play #3
/*\ Attention Fairfield! /*\
John Anthony and his crew arrived in Fairfield, Maine early Friday morning. It was pushing it for what John wanted to accomplish, but he was confident. He had been in contact with Mr. Paul Hatch, commissioner of Somerset County in Maine. A little business proposal would leave John holding a pep-rally in the town square of Fairfield to bolster support for POW: New England’s show Sunday night. While the initial pep-rally idea seemed good to John, Mr. Hatch took flight and came up with a bigger, bolder plan. Friday night on Channel 4 Local News, John Anthony would be given a five minute window to hype the Sunday night event to all of Somerset County. John loved the idea and agreed so long as Mr. Hatch would personally join him on camera to help promote the show that featured him siding with Combat Soldier against the team of Victor Bloodmoon and Eastern Heavyweight Champion JR Zevon.
Prior to the television spot John met the various news reporters at the WKXN studios as well as finally coming to a face-to-face with county commissioner Hatch. He again thanked him for the support of his idea, while Hatch in turn thanked John for giving the small town of Fairfield a chance to put themselves on the map by packing this upcoming event to the roof. John promised he had a surprise or two up his sleeve, a sleeve that was worth thousands of dollars by the way. Yes, for such an occasion John chose only his best Italian designed suit and made sure everything was perfect for his media appearance. Such vanity.
The newscasters began the evening news reporting on mundane things such as local politics, a new bill to increase water purification plant proficiencies, and a look into local sports. With the topic of sports on mind, they announced a special guest was in the studio that night. In fact, two of them. A stationed camera panned to a blue screen where John Anthony and Hatch stood. A red light shone on top of the camera signifying it was inactive as the newscasters continued their duty. John stood slightly taller than the commissioner, but they proved to be a charismatic duo. The man attending to the camera began a countdown before flicking a switch. The red light flashed green and John was live on Channel 4 Local News for all of Somerset County to see.
“Ladies and gentlemen of Maine, my name is John Anthony. I’ve traveled the country straight from the diamond-laced streets of Beverly Hills to the fine town of Fairfield tonight. Beside me stands your county commissioner, Mr. Paul Hatch. Tonight I’d like to personally invite all of you watching to an event that takes place in just two days that will shake the foundations of this little town. I feel an event of this caliber could put Fairfield on the map, but I need your help. You see, this weekend, in the main event for POW: New England’s professional wrestling show “Road to Over in Dover,” you’ll find myself teaming up with an excellent partner to square off against none other than the champion himself and a juggernaut in Victor Bloodmoon. These names may not be household topics yet, but after Sunday they will be! Believe me when I say it that the company Power On Wrestling will be known throughout these lands and the New England branch will be known for its integrity and stellar shows week in and week out! A new form of entertainment has arrived and I, John Anthony, am opening the doors to all of you for this event. Tickets remain on sell and if we fill up the seats then we’ll pack the isles!
But what makes this Sunday so special? Well I’m glad you asked. Recently POW: New England crowned a new heavyweight champion; the honorable JR Zevon. This man fought tooth and nail to claim the strap and wields it with great power. He deserves the position he’s reached and the respect he’s earned. However… some have recently questioned his true standing. He claims to be a champion who wants to bring integrity to the belt and bolster the image of the title, but he also sides with the man who personally ruined my partner’s previous match, Victor Bloodmoon. What kind of man teams up with another who uses such underhanded tactics? Surely someone who wants to prove a point, and this Sunday is his chance! And what an opportunity for you fans to see YOUR champion in action! I promise, on behalf of myself, my partner, JR Zevon, and POW: New England itself, that this tag match will be phenomenal. In fact, in a recent interview with Zevon himself, when asked about his opponents this weekend he stated: ‘All three men have shown potential’
He also had the following to say about any true champion:
‘A wrestling champion ought to be an upstanding moral being with a deep respect for this business… The wrestling world deserves that.’
And I wholeheartedly agree! What better way for JR Zevon to show this deep respect for the business and for you fans than to step into that ring in an exhibition match against two rising stars in myself and Combat Soldier? This man deserves a tip of our hats for putting his pride on the line so soon to a PPV event, and I assure you that this opportunity will be utilized by all four men involved to bring to you a main event worthy of the POW: New England name, and worthy of taking place in your town of Fairfield, Maine!”
John, feeling proud of himself, turned his attention to Mr. Hatch.
“Now, Mr. Hatch, I’d like to personally invite you to attend as a guest of myself. It’d be nothing short of an honor to match strengths with the champion of POW: New England with you yourself in the front row!”
Mr. Hatch seemed surprised, stuttered, and then agreed. John signaled off to his right and a stagehand rushed towards him holding a box. John opened it to reveal the new shirt POW has released as part of John’s upcoming merchandising line. The shirt was adorned by a shaded glass of champagne and the words “Taste the High Life,” as well as John Anthony’s signature of course.
“Mr. Commissioner, I would also like to offer this to you as a gift. Call it conceited if you wish, but I just want you to get the full experience this weekend and report to those who can’t attend how great of an event this turns out to be.
Now, citizens of Maine, I say to you as I’ve said to crowds before: get ready! POW: New England is on its way and we’re taking your city by storm Sunday night. Combat Soldier, Bloodmoon, Zevon, and myself will earn your respect with a match like no other! If any of the four of us for some reason decided to opt out, to cower behind loopholes, or to disrespect the fans in some other way… well then I’d question their integrity and ability to perform their duties as a professional wrestler. I mean, could you imagine if Zevon himself let down the abundance of you by not upholding his own agenda of being a respectful and integrity-driven champion? I’d be nothing short of embarrassed! So mark your calendars and get your hands on those tickets. Join the commissioner and myself for an event that will put Fairfield on the map!”
John turned to the commissioner and shook his hand as the cameraman flipped the same switch and the light faded back to red.
In chess, they call a move like that putting your opponent in “check”.
